In ancient Japan, there was a period of peace known as the Jomon period, which lasted 14,000 years without weapons. How did we live in peace without a fight? What kind of worldview was it? You can feel it from living in harmony with nature, valuing the circle among the people, the belief of the Yaoyorozu no Kami (animism) that all things have the spirits and the way of thinking “you are me, I am you” like the oneness.
You can find more essential things from the Jomon period, such as a community centered on women who value harmony with others, the shrine maiden who connected the universe and the earth, and the importance of sound, what kind of physical sensations the Jomon people had.
And you will experience them through with the voice and movement meditation work, the talking circles, traditional Japanese village festival of singing and dancing.
If we can remember the feelings we had back then, maybe the whole earth will be able to regain peace again?
What was valued during the Jomon period
“The circle”
I cherished the circle.
In the Jomon period, village buildings were arranged to form a circle There was a space for ceremonies and to honor and pray to the ancestors placed in the middle of village. The houses surrounded it in a concentric circle. They lived in a circle of consideration, cooperation, and respect for each other.
“Feeling"
They had the ability to sense everything delicately. To sense the other person's heart, the spirit that dwells in the universe, one's own body and mind, and the earth.
They could treat everything as if love themselves because it was very natural for them.
We will hold the workshop that will help you feel things more delicately.
“The harmony with the nature”
The mother of the earth is the universe, and the mother of humans is the earth. Even if humans try to do well within only themselves, it will not work unless we live in harmony with the Earth and the universe (including animals and plants). We will get to know It by consequences like a natural desaster. I will also give a lecture on how they lived in harmony.
“The animism”
They had a heart that felt the spirit that resided in all things, plants, stones, fire, water, and the sky, etc..
They interacted with these spirits, helped each other, exchanged love with each other, and lived lives in harmony with nature and the universe.
“The femininity (love, harmony, respect)”
Rather than a masculinity that favors war and economic supremacy, they valued a femininity that spreads out through love and harmony. They also contacted invisible beings through shrine maidens, worked together with the universe to solve problems that human wisdom alone could not solve, and filled them with the necessary love and light.
“Song and dance -festival-“
Singing and dancing have the power to purify all stagnation and help maintain physical and mental health. Even if there is stagnation within the circle, singing and dancing together softens it and fills us with the highest light as a community. It was also an important ritual to connect with the gods, as it had meanings such as praying for a good harvest, memorializing ancestors, and avoiding disasters.
”The awauta -Jomon mantra song-”
I valued the sound. The sound consist the basis for expressing everything. It is said that a god resides in each Japanese syllable. We will explore that feeling with the mantra song "Awauta", which is packed with the essence of the Jomon period.
